Larry E. Woods, 74, of Lenox, formerly of Creston, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015 at Greater Regional Medical Center, Creston. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 21 at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 809 W. Montgomery St., Creston. Mary O’Riley will officiate. Interment will be 2 p.m. Friday, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel. Military Honors will be provided by the Theodore J. Martens VFW Post #1797 of Creston and the United States Navy. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Larry Eugene Woods, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Violet Imogene (Weese) Woods, was born Sept. 18, 1940 at the home of his parents near Blockton, Iowa. Larry entered eternal rest on August 15, 2015 at Greater Regional Medical Center, Creston, Iowa at the age of seventy- four years, ten months, and twenty-eight days. Larry was educated in the Lenox School System and graduated from Lenox High School with the class of 1968. Following graduation, Larry worked for the Lenox Utilities and the LenCorp Factory before enlisting in the United States Navy. Larry entered active service on Aug. 9, 1960 and served on the U.S.S. Paul Revere during the Vietnam War. He was very proud to serve his country and has great respect for fellow service members and veterans. Larry was honorably discharged on Aug. 7, 1964 and returned to Lenox. Larry was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Vicker in Lenox on July 17, 1965. Two children were born to bless this union: Janet and Jason. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Upon returning to Lenox, Larry worked for Hoover Ball and Bearing. Later, the name changed to Tote Systems, where he worked until he and Shirley moved to Creston in 1979. He worked for the DNR for one summer before going to work for the Creston School System as a custodian, retiring in 2001. In retirement, Larry worked several years at The Pier in Creston. Larry and Shirley returned to live in Lenox in 2005. Left to cherish Larry’s memory is his loving wife, Shirley Woods, Lenox; his daughter, Janet (Tim) Bennett, Clearfield; and his son, Jason Woods, Lenox; three grandsons; one granddaughter; two step grandsons; one granddaughter-in-law; eight great-grandchildren; his sisters: Verla Coulthard, Cedar Falls, IA; Helen Lawrence, Stuart, IA; and Pat (Bill) Hingley, Diagonal, IA; his brothers: Ben (Dee) Woods, Tennessee; and Duane (Vicky) Woods, Corning, IA; his brothers-in-law: Tom (Ruta) Vicker, Naples, FL; and Jerry Mikkelsen, Creston; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding Larry in death were his parents; his mother-in-law and father- in-law, Mary and Art Vicker; his brothers-in-law, Alvin Coulthard, Bob Lawrence and Ken Vicker; and his sisters-in-law, Eilene Mikkelsen and Sally Vicker.
