John F. "Jack" Sandwick, 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 14, 2013 under the loving care of his family and of Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, to whom the family is grateful. John is predeceased by his beloved wife Gladys of 66 years. John is survived by four children and their families, Jane and Ricky Williams, John and Laura Sandwick Jr., Roger and Lorraine Sandwick , and Barbara and Ron Clough; and six grandchildren who adored him, Sarah, Isaac, Nate, Michelle, Matt, and Emma. John was born in Newark Valley on May 14, 1922, the son of George and Florence Barber Sandwick. He graduated from Newark Valley High School where he excelled in athletics. He later was given a tryout with the New York Yankees and played semi-pro baseball in Illinois. Later in his life, he was acknowledged for athleticism by being inducted into the Broome County Sports Hall of Fame. John received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s degree from the University of Illinois. After starting college at Syracuse and playing on the Orange Frosh team, John volunteered for service and served in the United States Navy during WW II, achieving the rank of quartermaster 2nd degree. On October 21, 1944, John married Gladys Keith in Newark Valley. Gladys passed away October 2, 2010. After completing his degrees at Illinois, John was a teacher and a highly successful coach at the Earlville, Hamilton, and Madison schools in central New York. After receiving his certification in school administration, John then served as supervising principal at Leonardsville Central School during 1958 – 1966. He was hired as Principal-Superintendent by the Hermon-DeKalb Central School district in 1966 and dedicated his professional career to the students, faculty, and community of that area for nearly twenty years. In 1984 he retired from HDCS, served briefly in a similar capacity at Edwards Central School, and then retired to enjoy time with his wife, his sons and daughters, and his grandchildren. Throughout his life, he enjoyed reading, fishing, golf, and spending time with his family on camping trips, especially on Blake Lake and the St. Lawrence River. Calling hours are Saturday, April 20th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Hermon.
