WITHERSPOON, CHARLES ROBERT Charles Robert Witherspoon, a 47 year San Diego resident, passed away at St. Paul's Health Care Center on Saturday, April 7th. He was 85. Mr. Witherspoon is survived by his wife, Miriam, of 61 years; one son, Charles Witherspoon, Jr. and wife, Deborah; three grandchildren, Shelby, Charlie and John. Mr. Witherspoon served in the United States Navy; his military duty included World War II (1942-1945) World War I Destroyer, USS Kilty (APD15)-Alaska, Solomon Islands; New Guinea, Philippine Islands, Okinawa; two U.S.N. Electronics Schools; Submarine School in New London, CT; service aboard submarines USS Odax and USS Tigrone; Special Weapons Training, Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM; Special Weapons Training Unit, Oaku, Hawaii; 1956 Officers Candidate School, Newport, RI; Special Weapons Unit, Norfolk, VA; service on Aircraft Carriers U.S.S. Forestal, Intrepid and Bennington; Commanding Officer Beach Jumper Unit, San Diego; two years in and out of Vietnam as Officer-In-Charge of Naval Special Warfare Group: Beach Jumpers, Seals and Underwater Demolition Detachment-Okinawa; Nuclear Weapons Training Group, San Diego. After a 30 year military career, Mr. Witherspoon retired in 1972. A Memorial Service is planned for Friday, April 13th at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 320 Date St., San Diego. Final Resting place will be Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
