Clayton Peter Engman was born December 25, 1940 in Nelson, MN. He attended Wilson High School in St. Paul, MN. Clay entered the U.S. Navy on April 15, 1959 and was honorably discharged April 11, 1963 On May 17, 1991 he married Marlene Schumacher in Honolulu, HI. After Clay retired from the U.S. Postal Service in October 1991, they moved to a farm near Pine City and began raising Belgian Draft horses, inspired by his father-in-law. In 2004, Clay and Marlene moved to a home on Pokegama Lake near Pine City where he enjoyed fishing. After Marlene retired, they purchased a motor home and began traveling throughout the USA and spending their winters in Florida and Arizona. Clay’s ultimate RV trip was to Alaska in 2004. Clay enjoyed going to auctions, collecting antique horse equipment, playing Texas Hold’em and Cribbage, and frequenting casinos wherever they were staying. He loved watching game shows and his dream was to appear on the Price is Right. Clay never missed the MN State Fair since he started walking as a child. Clay was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Heath Perkins American Legion Post # 51 in Pine City. He will be remembered for his love of life and sense of humor. Clay died Monday, July 14, 2014 at his home at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife Marlene Engman, children: Tim Engman of Scribner, NE, Shelly and her husband Jeff Friese of Pine City, and Holly Schmidt and her fiancée Peter Black of Cottage Grove; grandchildren: Alyssa and her husband Michael Busse of Ellsworth, WI, Aaron Friese, Andrew Friese both of Pine City, Emma Schmidt, Gabriela Schmidt, Sam Schmidt, Phoenix Black all of Cottage Grove, Ethan Black of Mound, great granddaughter Lucille Rose Busse of Ellsworth, WI; sister Evelyn Scheuble of Pine City, and brother Larry Engman and special friend Kathy Elliott also of Pine City, the mother of his children Connie Engman, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Clayton is preceded in death by his parents Simon & Lottie (Granlund) Engman, brother Elmo Engman, and brother-in-law Robert Scheuble. Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 19th at the Swanson Funeral Chapel. A time of visitation will be held two hours prior also at the Swanson Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 12:15 p.m., Monday, July 21st (Meet at Assembly Area #2 at 12:00 p.m. using the Funeral Cortege entrance to the cemetery). Memorials are preferred to: American Cancer Society. Arrangements are with the Swanson Funeral Chapel of Pine City.
