Donald "Don" Sherrill, Sr. Obituary Donald “Don” Ralph Sherrill, Sr., 85, of Conover passed away on Friday, October 6, 2017 at Conover Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born November 2, 1931 in Catawba County to the late S.D. Sherrill, Sr. and Rosalee Parlier Sherrill. Don was a lifelong member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton and served in the United States Navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service. Don wanted everyone to know he got an offer for a trip he could not refuse-destination: Heaven. He’s currently experiencing sights more beautiful than we can imagine while reuniting with many family members and friends. We are sure some of his favorite earthly pastimes have carried over and he is enjoying sitting on a tractor cracking jokes with Jesus. Don was a proud husband, father, and papaw who loved to brag about his loved ones to anyone who would listen. He enjoyed getting to tell stories about his time in the US Navy, driving buses for Christian Tours, and volunteering at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Often times, he would repeat those stories over and over due to the pride he took in his job and the many memories that were made. In addition to his parents, his many loved ones who have long awaited a reunion with him are brothers, S.D. Sherrill, Jr. and Bill Sherrill. His lifelong mission of making the world a better and happier place will be carried on by; Wife of 29 years: Shelba McCall Sherrill of the home Sons: Donald Sherrill, Jr. of Claremont David Sherrill and wife Angie of Newton Daughter: Hollie Sherrill of Conover Brother: Jim Sherrill and wife Shirley of Newton Grandchildren: Skyler Courreges, Caleb Courreges, Savanna Sherrill and Jeremy Hipps Great-Grandchild: Jordin Hipps A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton. Rev. David Hamlyn will officiate. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church. As a family, we raise Moon Pies and RC Colas (his favorite) to celebrate his long and love-filled life Don lived. Here’s to you Don! You will be missed.
